May on the lake
Spring is now in full bloom as Lake Como bursts into a vibrant tableau of color. The region's lush greenery is beautifully accented by the cascading purple blossoms of wisteria, framing the picturesque landscapes and village facades everywhere you look. This striking natural display sets a stunning backdrop for the bustling weekly markets, where locals and visitors alike come to soak in the charm of the area, sample fresh seasonal produce, and explore a rich array of artisanal crafts.
The Bustling Weekly Markets of Lake Como
Lake Como's weekly markets are essential gatherings that showcase the region's rich culinary and artisanal traditions. These vibrant morning markets offer everything from fresh, seasonal produce to handmade crafts and local delicacies like cheeses and cured meats. They serve as more than just shopping destinations; they are lively social hubs where locals connect and share the essence of Lake Como life. Exploring these markets is a must for anyone seeking an authentic taste of the area. Here are a few of my favourites:
Como Market (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays): Dive into a variety of offerings from fresh produce to local crafts in the heart of the city.
Lenno Market (Tuesdays): Enjoy lakeside shopping with a selection of artisanal cheeses, meats, and more. Also lots of opportunities to enjoy a late breakfast or lunch at the lakeside restaurants.
Bellagio Market (First and third Wednesday of the month): In one of the most picturesque settings, this market is perfect for unique local finds.
Cernobbio Market (Wednesdays): A vibrant mix of regional produce awaits, ideal for picking up Italian culinary ingredients. My personal favorite is the fresh fish stall, where you can enjoy freshly fried calamari and prawns right on the lakeshore.
Varenna Market (Wednesdays): Discover gourmet delights and crafts in this intimate market setting.
Ingredient of the Month: Fava Beans (Broad Beans)
Fava beans shine in May, celebrated for their buttery texture and rich flavor. These beans are versatile, featuring in a range of dishes that highlight their fresh, nutty taste.
Fava Bean and Pecorino Salad: Combine blanched fava beans with sharp Pecorino cheese for a simple, fresh salad.
Risotto with Fava Beans: Infuse creamy risotto with the green goodness of fava beans for a comforting meal.
Pasta con Fava: Toss fava beans with crispy pancetta for a hearty pasta dish that's full of flavor.
Fava Bean Soup: Puree fava beans with broth and herbs to create a smooth, soothing soup, perfect for spring evenings.
Recipe of the Month: Fava Bean Puree on Bruschetta with Fresh Stracciatella Cheese
This month, we celebrate spring with a delightful bruschetta, combining the creaminess of fava beans with the lush texture of stracciatella cheese.
Ingredients:
2 cups fresh fava beans, shelled
1/4 cup Pecorino cheese finely grated
3 tbsp olive oil
2 garlic cloves
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1 Italian crusty bread, sliced and toasted
1 cup stracciatella cheese
Fresh mint or basil
Instructions:
Blanch the fava beans in boiling water for 2-3 minutes, then plunge into ice water. Peel the outer skins.
In a blender, combine fava beans, Pecorino cheese, olive oil, 1 garlic clove , salt, and pepper. Blend until smooth.
Rub the toasted bread slices with a garlic clove and then top each slice with a generous dollop of the fava bean puree.
Top each bruschetta with a spoonful of stracciatella cheese.
Finish with a drizzle of olive oil, freshly cracked black pepper then top with a flurry of mint or basil and serve immediately.
Enjoy this recipe as an aperitivo with a glass of white wine or prosecco, or as starter or even a light lunch.
As the wisteria blooms and the markets thrive, the month of May invites you to experience the natural beauty and culinary delights of Lake Como.
Looking forward to welcoming you to our next culinary adventure by the lake!
